Dr Amira Guirguis promoted as new Chair of RPS Science and Research Committee

She brings a wealth of experience and expertise in pharmaceutical science and research

The Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) has appointed Dr Amira Guirguis as the new Chair of its Science and Research Committee, effective from the New Year.

An accomplished pharmacist and renowned expert in substance misuse, Dr Guirguis was nominated by the RPS as a ‘woman to watch’ in 2020.

Previously, she has served as the Principal Investigator for the first Home Office-licensed Pharmacist-led drug checking service in the UK, and as the MPharm Programme Director at Swansea University Medical School.

A PhD in Novel Psychoactive Substances (NPS) detection, she has made significant contributions to the field of pharmacy, to drug policy, and has won the 2014 JPAG Geoffrey Phillips award for her groundbreaking research.

The SRC comprises esteemed individuals from various sectors, including academia, industry, regulation, hospitals, and community practice. Working along with the RPS Assembly, the committee provides strategic leadership, advocacy, and expert advice to guide pharmaceutical science and pharmacy research on a national and global scale.

Speaking about her new role, Dr Amira Guirguis, said: “I am looking forward to working with a distinguished team dedicated to integrating science into pharmacy practice, to fostering pharmaceutical science research and collaborations across disciplines, and to contributing to expert advice on cutting-edge science that enhances patient care.”

RPS Chief Scientist Professor Parastou Donyai said the team is looking forward to working with Amira and benefiting from her “passion, expertise and proactivity.”
