Patients taking GLP-1 receptor agonist injections for weight management are being advised to watch for an unusual side effect that causes painful, hypersensitive skin - a symptom that could become more noticeable as people switch to heavier autumn wardrobes.
Allodynia is a neurological phenomenon where normally non-painful stimuli, such as light clothing rubbing against the body or bedsheets touching the skin, produce burning or tenderness.
Sobia Qasim, a pharmacist at UK online provider Curely, warned that because allodynia typically occurs without an accompanying rash or visible erythema, patients frequently mistake the pain to external triggers.
"Allodynia can make completely ordinary sensations uncomfortable. Clothes rubbing against the body, a bedsheet touching the skin or even a gentle hand may produce pain or a burning sensation.
"The absence of a rash can make the symptom particularly confusing. People may initially blame their washing detergent, skincare products or sun exposure because there is nothing visibly wrong with the skin."
UK Summary of Product Characteristics (SmPC) data for Wegovy (semaglutide) lists dysaesthesia - an umbrella term covering burning, tingling, skin sensitivity, and allodynia - among its recognised adverse reactions.
Related events were reported by 2.1% of patients receiving Wegovy injections, compared with 1.2% receiving a placebo.
Most cases were described as mild to moderate, with the majority of affected patients recovering while continuing treatment. Researchers have not established exactly why the reaction may occur.
Emerging medical literature has similarly highlighted cutaneous reactions linked with tirzepatide. A 2026 case series published in the American Journal of Case Reports documented two patients experiencing allodynia, with one reporting weekly post-injection sunburn sensations and another describing widespread pain rated at eight out of 10 triggered by bedding and clothing.
Pharmacists advise that patients experiencing unexplained skin tenderness should not abruptly stop or reduce their medication without consulting their prescriber. Instead, they should log the onset of symptoms relative to injection days and recent dose escalations to allow healthcare professionals to adjust titration schedules safely.
